Layers

This page will cover the 2 main uses of the layers window:

  1. The organization and prioritization of data layers.

  2. The appearance of the layers.

Organization

The layers window displays a list of the data sources loaded, the data is divided into layers which can be viewed by clicking the arrow next to the data source name. In order to load additional or remove layers, see Data sources: loading and unloading data, but if you wish to disable the data temporarily, you can click on the data source’s or layer’s icon.

It is possible to reorder the layers. The order in the list is what determines what will be displayed on top in the map.

Appearance

Loaded data sources will appear in the Layers window. The data sources in this window can be expanded to show the layers.

The appearance of each layer can be customized separately through the gear icon to on the right side. A legend of can be generated for a data source by clicking on the paint palette icon next to the data source name.

Some layers will not have a button for the legend as there are no colors to define in the data set, an example would be the Wellbore data sets.

Under the gear icon you can find several appearance settings for the objects, not all settings will be available for every data set.

  • Labels

    • Toggles whether labels/nametags are shown on map.

  • Label size

    • Changes the font size of the labels.

  • Clusters (point data only)

    • Toggles whether clusters are used for wells. Clusters collect several wells into a single point to reduce the number of object on the screen.

  • Fill and outline

    • Changes the way objects are displayed; outline, fill, or both.

  • Line thickness

    • Changes the line thickness of an objects outline if this is part of the selected style.

  • Layer zoom range

    • Determines the zoom level at which the objects will be displayed on the map. You can use the “statistics” widget to get a feel for the current zoom level of the map.

  • Label zoom range

    • Determines the zoom level at which the labels will be displayed.

  • Color scheme

  • Tints

    • Changes the level of grayscale.

    • Changes the opacity of a layer.

To improve the view it is possible to disable layers (clicking the icon in front of the layer name) or apply filters (available through the “windows” dropdown, see Creating an advanced filter for more info), this cleans up the screen and allows you to focus on the important data.

You can rearrange the data on the screen by rearranging the data sources in the layers window, their order will determine what is displayed on top in the map.
